Planning for Vermont Residents and Second-Home Owners
Radius works with clients across New England, including Vermont. Some are full-time Vermonters. Others live in Massachusetts and have a Vermont home for weekends, summers or retirement.
Owning property or living in more than one state raises tax and estate questions that a single-state plan can miss. We help you see them early and coordinate with your attorney and tax professional.
Local Planning Considerations
What Often Matters in Vermont
-
01
Vermont's own estate tax
Vermont has its own estate tax, separate from the federal tax and from Massachusetts. Its rules can apply to Vermont real estate owned by someone who lives elsewhere, so a Vermont second home deserves a conversation with an estate attorney.
-
02
What Massachusetts counts
For deaths on or after January 1, 2023, Massachusetts no longer counts real estate located outside the state when it calculates its estate tax. That can change planning for Massachusetts residents who own Vermont property.
-
03
Retirement income
Vermont exempts some Social Security income for filers under certain income levels, and other retirement income, such as IRA and 401(k) withdrawals, is generally taxable. The details change, so confirm current rules with the Vermont Department of Taxes or your tax professional.
-
04
Seasonal living and cash flow
Heating, maintenance, property taxes and travel add up for a second home. We include those costs when we plan your retirement income.
